Stopping Light Seepage In RV’s Using Magnets

We are often questioned on how people can stop light coming through their RV’s, especially during the summer months with early sunrises. We had recently heard from two of our customers who were looking to solve this issue. The solution to this issue – creating their own magnetic blinds to kick out the light!

Like many RV and campervan owners, our customers had a true passion for motorhomes and emailed in some great photos! Light seepage is a common problem that many motorhome users run into. Manufactured and fitted with thin small curtains, the original van curtains are never practical. Fortunately, most RV’s, campervans and motorhomes are made from ferrous material, meaning that it is the perfect material for attaching magnets to and holding curtains in place.

Each and every curtain will be different shapes, sizes and materials, meaning the weight of the curtains may vary. This will lead to each curtain requiring a different magnet, so make sure you factor this in if you are undergoing your own project! However, this customer purchased 1 pack of our 25mm (0.98″) x 8mm (0.31″) x 2mm (0.08″) N35 Neodymium Magnet – 2.1kg (4.63lbs) and 2 packs of our 15mm (0.6″) x 4mm (0.16″) x 4mm (0.16″) thick N42 Neodymium Magnet – 2.2kg (4.85lbs) Pull.

We advised our customer to simply sew and glue the magnets into the binding of the curtains. After creating their curtains, they couldn’t be happier with the result and have said they will start to make some for clients in the future now they have an idea of which magnets to use and where they need to be placed! Check out the final results below! We think they look awesome!

From the images you can see the magnets securely hold the curtains in place, whilst creating a sealant-like effect around the window to stop the light from seeping through the windows!

From our next customer, we heard they were attaching the curtains with suction cups. However, they found that when the heaters kicked in, it interfered with the fitting. So what was their solution? Magnets!

When making the blinds they measured the size of the windows, cut foam to the size of their window, and then applied their chosen fabric over the top, ensuring to fold it over to create a binding. During this process, the magnets were placed into the binding of the blinds. Binding is a method that is used to hide the raw edges of cut fabrics!

To achieve this the customer used 20mm (0.79″) x 6mm (0.24″) x 1.5mm (0.06″) thick N42 Neodymium Magnet – 1.6kg (3.53lbs) Pull to place inside the binding of the blinds. The magnets around the edge of the fabric easily attach to the metalwork of the campervan and secure the blinds into place, and create a sealant-like effect around the window to stop the light from seeping through. As you can see there are many ways to stop light from seeping into your RV’s, Campervans and rooms, and all can be done with the help of magnets!
